It certainly feels like Toyo is breezing through this tournament, almost as if there’s something more interesting around the corner. So, all in all, I felt the chapter was just sorta “meh”. Communicating color isn’t as important as the experience of the medium. Manga is meant to be read in black and white. In the manga, Oda colors it black, and the result is a striking character. If you look at the character of Katakuri, his hair is supposed to be a light purple. Even though this is the case, the screen tones are never overwhelming you with grey. You can also contrast Toyotaro’s work with Oda, who does use a lot of grey screen tones in his later manga chapters. Black and white are in perfect balance, every panel’s size is met with purpose. Hit is also lost in a sea of grey instead of the eye naturally gravitating to him. The result is characters with sections of their design that are randomly black.Ĭontrast both of these things with how Toriyama drafted his manga and the contrast is startling. It feels like he wants to show us everything that is supposed to be a darker color with a shade of grey. It feels like Toyotaro doesn’t think through how the balance of black, white and grey enhances the reading experience of his manga. They come in sheets and are cut out via exacto knife and then pasted onto the manga page. It’s an easy way to color sections of manga instead of inking. Screen tones are used by lots of mangaka to insert grey, patterns, and whatever else they need. For one, he crowds way too many panels per page, and does all these angled panels that just feel random, instead of what panels make sense to enhance reading and story.Īnd this is my biggest complaint about the DBS manga. I also think Toyotaro’s draftsmanship needs work, and it’s something I find disappointing almost every time I read the DBS manga. But if Goku is able to purposefully break into the barrier and obtain UI, that’s going to be weird later, I think. I’ll save judgment until I read what Toyo has in mind, but I feel like part of the reason it *sort of* works in the anime, is because he obtains it by freak accident and then isn’t able to do it again after the tournament. If this is going where I think it is, then UI won’t be something which Goku obtains accidentally. Something Goku said also hints that hey knows what Ultra Instinct is, and he wants to use the tournament to push past the barrier that he’s come up. And yeah, I get that isn’t out of character for Goku, but I still didn’t like it, especially when he was fighting alongside Hit in the earlier panels. It was a jarring switch. I wasn’t a fan of how Goku just dropped out of Blue because he wanted to fight Jiren by himself. Toyotaro did a nice job of putting Goku in some cool poses too.

His expressions for Goku are always dynamic and full of life. Without a doubt they’re my favorite thing about his manga. Do I like the idea of Hit storing up time and hiding in the space, or warping time to slow down Jiren’s movements? Both are pretty cool.Īlso, I absolutely adore Toyotaro’s character designs. Some of the changes boil down to a matter of preference. This chapter was just kind of “meh” for me. I also liked how it was Vegeta who decided to fuse to become Vegetto. In the previous arc, I liked the explanation for how and why Zamasu decided to become Black better in the manga, because Toyotaro avoided a time loop. Some of Toyo’s decisions I really like, and I like them better than the anime. There’s plenty of people in the DB community who say the manga is, without a doubt, better than the anime. You know, whenever I read the DBS manga, I’m always reminded of how conflicted I feel about it.
